Something I’m not really happy with

It has been a while since the last time I made Fleur a new dog bed, but it was very much needed. She has this hobby to kind of dig into her pillow, which is not too good for the fabric. It usually doesn’t take too long before a cover is transformed into a rug that looks as if it is made of rags.

This time I tried something completely different from what I usually make for her. Especially because I wanted to try new techniques. To make a border like this was the challenge this time. It is like a tube filled with fiberfill and to get the corners right was harder than I thought it might be. I’m not happy with it at all.

For now it will do, but I’m already planning to make something new. Fleur doesn’t mind; she’s happy with it.

Trip around the World

P1020783

It started with these colors of yarn and an idea to make a cowl with motives based on patterns from all over the world.

Looking at images in books and of course a lot on the web I found a lot of possible ideas, and eventually I made charts which I could use.

And now there is this warm, soft, cozy cowl/infinity scarf to touch, to wear, to look at.

The cowl is knitted in-the-round with Stylecraft DK on needle 3.5 mm. In the end the first and last row are joined with kitchener stitch.

Too bad the inside isn’t visible anymore; I think it looks great too.

The pattern is as usual available in English and Dutch.

A little sneak peek

Working hard, almost there.

P1020841

Just a little sneak peek to show you what I’m working on. Now the dull part starts: checking the pattern and all the charts. I love it so far.

Toys and Candy

P1020760

This week I ordered a box of yarn I never used before. Usually I try to knit and crochet with all natural yarns, so only wool or cotton, sometimes a bit of linen.

I never used synthetic yarns. But because they certainly have their advantages, I thought it might be a good idea to try  and when I want to try something it doesn’t mean I buy 1 skein. So yesterday a huge box was delivered with all 73 colors available of Stylecraft Special DK.

P1020764

The choice for this yarn was made after doing some research; reading about different yarns, looking at pictures of projects made with various yarns and looking what yarns are popular. Isn’t Ravelry the most wonderful place?

But now what to do with it?

P1020758

The idea is to knit in fair-isle technique and to make something inspired by patterns from all over the world. So not only Scandinavian stars, or patterns used for Latvanian mittens, but also inspired by geometrical African patterns, woven Chinese fabrics or Japanese kimono fabrics.  It is fun to collect these patterns and designs and to translate them into something that can be knitted.

Hopefully it works out; at least I’m having a good time!

Lange Jan

P1020743

This embroidery has been made by my grandfather. He lived a great part of his life in the town of Middelburg and he was a special man. Not only did he embroider, which was quite odd for a man of his generation, he also painted and made some beautiful ink drawings. Unfortunately, most of his work has been gone.  After his death in 1980 this little piece hang in my grandmothers living room, and it shows that she smoked a lot. I’ve tried to clean it, but this is as good as it gets. It only needed a new frame.

P1020744

And its own place in my little gallery,

P1020748

It is a bit difficult to make a decent photo because my hallway is only 90 cm (35 inch) wide.

The other pieces on the wall have all been made by me; different samplers with Dutch symbols and a little piece which tells a little bit more about something else I love to do.

Meeting again

Just a quick post to let you know I’m still around…. kind of. The past couple of weeks have gone by so fast, and still there is not really much to tell you.

P1020717

This is a chair I have upholstered nearly 5 years ago. I just liked to play with the fabrics and try to make something out of this plain grey chair. It is still one of my favorite pieces in the house and it is holding up quite nicely.

P1020697

I had some fabrics left and this time I used them for something much easier: a simple draught excluder.

P1020718

It is just half an inch too long, but I did that on purpose, because the draught on this door is really too much, and this way it definitely will help ( I at least hope so).

P1020716

And then there is this:

P1020723

This year I didn’t have any New Years resolutions but one; to read more books in English. It is so easy to read only Dutch translations, but as one of the reasons I started this blog was because I wanted to improve my English, there are more ways to do so, and reading is actually one of the most obvious. So for a good start, I bought these three novels ( and read the first two).

The covers of these books are simply amazing, don’t you think?

Ins Blaue Hinein

IMG_8515

Christmas Light on Regent Street, London. Last week we went just for one day to London. Unfortunately just one day. There is always too much to see and do, but this time we went especially for the Abstract Expression exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. Work from American artists like Rothko, Pollock, and Still.  Huge canvases in the most incredible colors. This is art with an impact. No recognizable shapes or subjects, and yet, these works are really worth looking at for a long time. It wasn’t allowed to take pictures, so all I can do is talk about it. Check the link above for more info.

On our way to the boat to England, we passed Wassenaar, where a new museum is opened: Voorlinden. Here I made this weird picture of my husband standing on the floor of a swimming pool.

P1020692

Knitted with 2 strands, one dark and one light and very soft yarn, a new cardigan. In the picture above the colours are quite right, the picture below is a bit off. Pattern: Weekend Walk by Drops.

P1020688

This is the second cardigan I made with this pattern, and I really love it. It is very easy to make and very warm and soft to wear. There are a lot of options left to mix colours of both yarns, so maybe I’ll make more of these.
